Does Honey Help with Hay-fever?

What is Hay-fever? 

Hay-fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide.

Symptoms of hay-fever include sneezing, coughing, runny or stuffy nose, watery eyes, and itching in the nose and throat. These symptoms can be triggered by flower pollen, grass pollen and tree pollen.

In general, hay-fever symptoms are most prevalent during the spring and fall seasons when certain types of pollen are abundant in the air.

Does Honey Help with Hay Fever?

One common suggestion is to use raw honey as a potential treatment for hay-fever. But does raw honey really help with hay-fever, or is it simply an old wives’ tale?

Raw honey has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for a variety of ailments, including allergies. Proponents of raw honey believe that consuming, unpasteurised honey can help to build immunity to allergens such as flower pollen.

But wait… If you’re allergic to pollen, eating honey may appear to be counterproductive when your body is telling you to avoid pollen at all costs.

The theory behind this is that the bees collect pollen from flowers and incorporate it into their honey, so the exposure to small amounts of the allergens could possibly build up an immunity to the  pollen that causes the allergies.

One particular study published in PubMed (an official website of the United States government) conducted on the use of raw honey for helping with hay fever. The study involved participants with seasonal allergies.

The case group received 1g/kg body weight of honey daily in separate doses for 4-week period. At the end of the four weeks period the group showed a significant improvement in individual hay fever symptoms.

What Honey is Best for Hay fever?

In cases of Hay fever local honey is known to be the best as it contains flower pollen from the flowers in your local area. However, for various reasons it is not always possible to source local honey. In such a cases, the best honey for hay-fever would be Wildflower honey. As it is produced by honey bees collecting flower nectar from a wide variety of flowers. Therefore, as longest the honey is raw (not pasteurised) you will consume pollen from a wide range of flowers which may benefit your immunity and make it more resilient to the pollen in your local area.

How Does Honey Help with Hay-Fever?

When you eat raw honey that contains small amounts of pollen (as opposed to mass-produced varieties), your immune system gets used to the presence of the allergenic particles. This can reduce your symptoms over time, if not eliminate them completely.

By using your raw honey, the theory goes that you’ll consume enough of the same pollen as you breathe in during the day to make a difference. Therefore, by exposing yourself to this pollen on a daily basis, you’re helping to build up a resistance.

Big reason to try raw honey for hay fever is that it contains antioxidants which can reduce inflammation and boost your immune system. This could make it easier for you to fight off infections like colds and flu—and you’ll certainly feel better if you don’t have those things on top of your allergies!

In conclusion:

There are certainly plenty of people who swear by it, claiming that a spoonful of raw honey each morning has helped them overcome their hay-fever symptoms for good. On the other hand, there aren’t enough scientific studies supporting this.

But one thing is for sure; if taking a little raw honey everyday during the spring months might help you overcome hay-fever, then we don’t feel that there’s a downside to giving it a try!
